PERKAWINANPERKAWINAN merupakan salah satu tahapan penting dalam siklus hidup seseorang. Melalui perkawinan masa remaja ditinggalkan, kedupan dewasa dengan segala hak dan tanggungjawab dimulai, dan regenerasi dilanjutkan. Dalam masyarakat komunal perkawinan bukan sekedar pembentukan keluarga baru tapi merupakan penyatuan keluarga besar. Dan di Sumba, setidaknya di masa lalu sewaktu persaingan dan perang antar suku kerap terjadi, perkawinan menjadi kian penting karena itu berati aliansi.
Perkawinan yang terjadi dalam masyarakat Sumba Barat dapat dikategorikan sebagai perkawinan eksogami yaitu perkawinan di luar suku, dimana lelaki anggota suku A menikah dengan perempuan anggota suku B tapi tidak boleh sebaliknya. di Sumba Barat klan penerima gadis (A) disebut doma sedangkan klan pemberi gadis (B) disebut loka. Seperti telah disinggung pada bab sebelumnya, loka adalah panggilan yang ditujukan kepada saudara laki-laki ibu atau secara umum seluruh kaum laki-laki di kabisu ibu. Karena secara tradisional mereka adalah pemberi gadis untuk dinikahi oleh laki-laki dari klan si ayah, maka loka juga diartikan sebagai kabisu pemberi gadis. Sementara klan si ayah yang adalah penerima gadis disebut doma. Singkatnya, dalam konteks pernikahan, loka secara harafiah bisa diartikan sebagai anak perempuan dari saudara laki-laki ibu, sedangkan doma adalah anak laki-laki dari saudara perempuan ayah, jadi yang terjadi sesungguhnya adalah apa yang disebut Webb Keane (1997) sebagai matrilateral crosscausin marriages.
Konsep perkawinan semacam ini (dengan adanya klan penerima dan pemberi gadis) mengharuskan paling sedikit keterlibatan tiga kabisu. Misalnya kabisu A, B dan C. kabisu A sebagai pemberi gadis untuk kabisu B, Kabisu B sebagai pemberi gadis untuk kabisu C dan kabisu C sebagai pemberi gadis untuk kabisu A. Karena kabisu A adalah pemberi gadis untuk kabisu B maka kaum lelaki kabisu A tidak diperbolehkan menikahi wanita dari kabisu B, dengan kata lain tidak boleh terjadi salin bertukar peran diantara kabisu pemberi dan penerima gadis. Pernikahan dengan sesama anggota suku juga dilarang keras, bahkan dianggap sebagai perilaku incent yang bisa mendatangkan malapetaka, yang hanya bisa dipulihkan melalui upacara pemujaan. Pelanggaran-pelanggaran yang lain misalnya perselingkuhan atau hubungan luar nikah (dengan anggota kabisu yang masuk kategori boleh menikah) biasanya diselesaikan melalui pembayaran denda yang disebut kanyala.
Karena dianggap sebagai penerus garis darah yang hanya mengalir lewat perempuan, kedudukan klan pemberi gadis (loka) selalu lebih tinggi dari pihak penerima gadis (doma). Kedudukan ini membawa banyak keuntungan antara lain bisa menentukan besarnya mas kawin (belis) yang harus dibayar pihak laki-laki. Dalam adat Sumba, belis bukan melulu urusan pihak laki-laki, karena pihak perempuan juga harus menyediakan balasannya. Belis yang diberikan pihak laki-laki sering diasosiasikan dengan bendabenda maskulin seperti kerbau dan kuda (hewan yang pemeliharaannya menjadi urusan kaum lelaki), parang dan tombak (senjata perang), serta mamoli (perhiasan yang sering dipakai sebagai anting-anting). Sekilas mamoli tidak bersifat maskulin, tetapi perhiasan ini adalah gambaran rahim atau simbol kemampuan reproduksi kaum wanita, dan dalam perkawinan diberikan sebagai simbol pengganti wanita yang akan dibawa pergi. Sementara itu, balasan yang diberikan pihak perempuan diasosiasikan dengan benda-benda feminin seperti babi (dipelihara kaum wanita) dan kain tenun (dibuat kaum wanita).
Jumlah belis tergantung kesepakatan dan status sosial seseorang, terutama pengantin wanitanya. Untuk kalangan bangsawan biasanya sekitar 30 puluhan ekor, rakyat biasa antara 5 - 15 ekor, sedangkan belis golongan budak dibayar oleh tuan mereka. Dari persepsi orang luar, pernikahan semacam ini terkesan semacam transaksi bisnis dengan perempuan sebagai obyek. Tetapi sangat berkebalikan dengan anggapan itu, orang Sumba sendiri melihat belis sebagai penghargaan terhadap wanita. Wanita selalu dianggap aset beraharga sebuah rumah tangga. Mereka adalah pekerja yang tekun, lebih dari itu mereka adalah mesin reproduksi yang memungkinkan sebuah generasi berlanjut. Karena itu niat baik seorang ayah melepas anak perempuannya harus diapresiasi keluarga laki-laki dengan memberikan sejumlah hadiah (belis). Si Ayah sendiri perlu menunjukan betapa berharga nilai anaknya dengan sejumlah hadiah balasan yang akan mengirirngi kepindahan si anak kelak. Tanpa itu anak perempuannya akan dianggap remeh oleh keluarga suaminya. Jadi jika ini transaksi bisnis, diamana letak untungnya? Begitu orang Sumba berargumen.
Pembayaran belis pun jarang dilakukan sekaligus. Sebagian diberikan saat pindah rumah, sebagian lagi diberikan sedikit-sedikit setiap kali pihak keluarga istri mengadakan pesta dan lain sebagainya. Mengingat mahalnya harga hewan, jarang pula ada satu keluarga yang bisa memenuhi belis berjumlah besar dengan kemampuannya sendiri. Lebih sering hewan-hewan ini diperoleh sebagai sumbangan dari keluarga-keluarga lain yang merupakan anggota kabisu keluarga bersangkutan. Tetapi tidak secara gratis, karena pihak penerima harus membayar kembali saat keluarga penyumbang membutuhkan di lain waktu.
Di Sumba Barat sebuah perkawinan umumnya dilakukan melalui tahapan berikut:
  1. Ngidi Pamama: semacam acara lamaran dimana pihak laki-laki datang ke kediaman pihak perempuan untuk menyatakan maksud mereka dengan membawa sirih-pinang dan satu ekor kuda. Jika maksud diterima, pihak perempuan balas memberikan sepasang kain tenun dan seekor babi (yang disembelih saat itu juga) sebagai tanda persetujuan. Pada kesempatan ini kedua belah pihak mulai merencanakan tahap negosiasi berikutnya dan menetapkan tanggal pertemuan selanjutnya.
  2. Weri Kawedo: Pada tahap ini pihak laki-laki datang ke kediaman pihak perempuan dengan membawa setidaknya 1 sampai 5 ekor kerbau dan satu ekor kuda jantan. Maksud kedatangan mereka adalah untuk melakukan pembicaraan penting seputar belis yang harus dibayar. Karena seluruh urusan ini dilakukan dalam bahasa-bahasa adat yang penuh kiasan, dimana keliru bicara atau keliru menerjemahkan maksud pihak lain bisa sangat merugikan pihak sendiri, maka diperlukan seseorang dengan keahlian dan kharisma khusus untuk bertindak sebagai juru bicara atau negosiator bagi masing-masing pihak. Para perantara ini disebut wunang, dan mereka lah yang sesungguhnya berhadap-hadapan melakukan pembicaraan adat lalu bolak-balik berkonsultasi dengan pihak keluarga. Pihak keluarga perempuan berkumpul di mbale katounga sedangkan keluarga laki-laki duduk di beranda depan bersama para wunang. Permintaan akan belis dinyatakan secara simbolis lewat kain tenun yang diletakkan di atas tempat sirih pinang lalu disajikan di depan wunang. selembar kain sama dengan 10 ekor hewan, jadi dua lembar berarti 20 ekor dan seterusnya. Proses negosiasi bisa memakan waktu berjam-jam, bahkan ada yang sampai tengah malam, dimana pengaruh keluarga besar sering mempersulit pengambilan keputusan. Jika kesepakatan dicapai, pihak wanita memberikan satu ekor babi babi yang dipotong saat itu juga lalu dagingnya dibagikan kepada seluruh peserta sebagai tanda kesepakatan.
  3. Dutu Mawinne: secara harafiah berarti mengiring perempuan, atau lebih tepat menggiring mempelai wanita untuk bepindah kekediaman suaminya. Dutu mawine bisa dilaksanakan bersamaan dengan weri kawedo jika pada saat itu belis dibayar lunas, tapi yang lebih sering selepas beberapa hari atau beberapa minggu. Pada kesempatan ini rombongan laki-laki membawa sejumlah belis yang telah disepakati. Kerbau, kuda, pedang, tombak serta mamoli emas, yang dibalas pihak perempuan dengan babi dan kain tenun (jumlahnya disesuaikan dengan pemberian pihak laki-laki). Mamoli emas yang mereka bawa akan diserahkan langsung oleh ibu mempelai laki-laki kepada ibu mempelai wanita. Mamoli ini disitilahkan sebagai watu mata (biji mata) yang melambangkan penghargaan terhadap usaha keras si ibu dalam membesarkan anak perempuannya yang sebentar lagi akan dibawa pergi. Selanjutnya, ayah si gadis memberikan sepasang kain tenun kepada pengantin laki-laki sebagai simbol ia telah diterima sebagai menantu, yang harus dibalas sang menantu baru dengan satu batang tombak.
Pengantin wanita dibawa ke kediaman suaminya dengan sejumlah besar pengiring. Pada pernikahan bangsawan, terutama di Sumba Timur zaman dulu, pengantin wanita dinaikkan ke atas kuda dan harus merapalkan syair tentang silsilah nenek moyangnya di sepanjang perjalanan. Namun karena enggan atau alasan lain, penganti wanita lebih sering berjalan kaki bersama rombongan pengiring sementara tugas merapal syair yang disebut mamohang dialihkan pada hambanya. Hamba inilah yang didandani dan dinaikkan ke atas kuda. Pengantin wanita sendiri didandani dengan sejumlah perhisan terutama gading yang dalam kebudayaan Sumba memiliki nilai tinggi (demikian pula wanita yang memakainya). Perhiasan-perhiasan ini tidak termasuk belis balasan seperti babi dan kain tenun yang akan jatuh ke tangan keluarga besar suami, tapi merupakan barang bawaan pengantin wanita sendiri (pa pangidi) yang menjadi hak milik pribadinya
Setelah tiba di kediaman sang suami, pengantin wanita harus menjalani ritual aila na yee yaitu meletakkan kain tenun di tiang utama rumah adat (di sebagian wilayah, kain tenun diletakkan di atas batu kubur). Ritual ini dimaksudkan sebagai pemberitahuan kepada marapu pendiri rumah bahwa si istri baru kini telah menjadi bagian rumah adat itu dan resmi berpindah ke kabisu suaminya. Kain tenun juga diserahkan kepada mertua dan sejumlah kerabat tertentu sebagai tanda penghormatan dan penerimaan.
Ada juga cara-cara perkawinan yang tidak melalui pakem normal tapi diterima sebagai adat kebiasaan setempat, antara lain:
  1. Palai ngiddi (bawa lari): pada prinsipnya merupakan kawin lari atau kawin paksa, di mana si pemuda, baik sendiri atau bersama sejumlah teman dan keluarganya membawa lari seorang wanita diluar kehendak wanita tersebut. Palai Iddi sering juga disebut Yappa Marada (tangkap di padang) karena pada zaman dahulu para pemuda sering menangkap wanita yang diincarnya di padang, saat wanita tersebut sedang sendirian disana mencari air atau kayu bakar. Perkawinan dengan cara seperti ini sangat jarang terjadi karena belis yang dituntut keluarga wanita akan sangat mahal.

  2. Palai ngidi mawinne: pada prinsipnya merupakan kawin lari juga tapi tanpa paksaan. kedua sejoli saling mencintai namun karena sejumlah alasan, mungkin tantangan dari pihak keluarga, si gadis akhirnya diam-diam pindah ke kediaman si pemuda. Yang sering terjadi, begitu si gadis berada di rumah mereka, keluarga pihak laki-laki segera mengirim utusan ke kelurga si wanita untuk mengumumkan keberadaan gadis tersebut. Hal ini penting agar tak disangka melarikan gadis yang bisa berbuntut belis besar. Pemberitahuan ini diiringi pemberian satu ekor kerbau atau kuda, yang jika situasinya bisa diterima, akan di balas pihak perempuan dengan kain tenun. Belisnya sendiri tergolong rendah Pihak perempuan tidak bisa menuntut banyak karena anak mereka sudah terlanjur ada di kediaman pihak laki-laki.

  3. Douna Uma Loka: Secara harafiah berarti masuk ke keluarga pihak istri dan pengertiannya persis seperti itu. Di banyak tempat Douna Uma Loka dikenal dengan nama kawin masuk dan biasanya terjadi karena dua alasan. Pertama: karena si mertua tidak memiliki pewaris laki-laki. Maka si menantu dianggap sebagai anak, diminta berpindah ke kabisu istrinya dan anak-anak yang lahir kelak menjadi bagian dari kabisu pihak perempuan. si memantu juga dibebaskan dari kewajiban membayar belis (walau sebetulnya mampu membayarnya), namun warisan keluarga tidak jatuh ketangannya, tapi langsung diwariskan kepada anak laki-lakinya kelak. Kedua: karena si menantu tidak sanggup membayar belis, dengan demikian tidak diperkenankan membawa pergi istrinya. Ia tinggal di lingkungan keluarga sang istri dan mendapat kedudukan yang rendah. Anak-anak yang lahir masuk kabisu pihak wanita dan menjadi hak mereka. Perkawinan jenis ini jarang terjadi kecuali dalam keadaan tertentu saja.

  4. Pamawo Mawinne Balu: lazim di Indonesiakan dengan istilah Perkawinan Silih Tikar yang berarti tukar tikar. pada prinsipnya merupakan perkawinan seorang janda yang suaminya telah meninggal dengan iparnya sendiri. Karena baik si janda maupun si ipar telah berada dalam satu ikatan keluarga maka perkawinan mereka bisa diibaratkan semacam perkawinan lanjutan sehingga tidak perlu membayar belis lagi. Perkawinan dilakukan melalui upacara parengini lii lora (upacara syukuran) yang bertujuan memberitahu arwah almarhum bahwa sejak hari itu istri dan anak-anaknya diambil alih oleh saudaranya untuk dipelihara dan dibesarkan, dengan syarat jika meninggal kelak jenazah si istri akan dikubur dalam satu kuburan bersama suaminya yang pertama. Dengan adanya perkawinan silih tikar ini tidak berarti si janda harus selalu menikah dengan iparnya, boleh saja ia menikahi pria lain, asalkan pria tersebut membayar belis kepada keluarga mendiang suminya sebesar belis yang dulu pernah mereka bayar sewaktu ia menikah dengan suami pertama.

  5. Kawin Gantung: perjodohan yang dilakukan sejak anak-anak masih bayi atau bahkan dalam kandungan. Perjodohan semacam ini hanya terjadi antar keluarga dekat, dimana komitmen keduanya dinyatakan melalui ritual adat yang biasanya bersamaan dengan upacara cukur rambut. Jika setelah dewasa tidak muncul masalah, perjodohan dapat dilanjutkan ke jenjang perkawinan melalui tahap-tahap seperti biasa

Dongeng Bahasa Inggris - Cinderella, adalah salah satu dongeng berbahasa Inggris yang sering diceritakan dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Selamat Membaca : 

Once upon a time... there lived an unhappy young girl. Unhappy she was, for her mother was dead, her father had married another woman, a widow with two daughters, and her stepmother didn't like her one little bit. All the nice things, kind thoughts and loving touches were for her own daughters. And not just the kind thoughts and love, but also dresses, shoes, shawls, delicious food, comfy beds, as well as every home comfort.  All this was laid on for her daughters. But, for the poor unhappy girl, there was nothing at all. No dresses, only her stepsisters' hand-me-downs. No lovely dishes, nothing but scraps. No nice rests and comfort. For she had to work hard all day, and only when evening came was she allowed to sit for a while by the fire, near the cinders. That is how she got her nickname, for everybody called her Cinderella. Cinderella used to spend long hours all alone talking to the cat. The cat said, 

"Miaow", which really meant, "Cheer up! You have something neither of your stepsisters have and that is beauty." 

It was quite true. Cinderella, even dressed in rags with a dusty gray face from the cinders, was a lovely girl. While her stepsisters, no matter how splendid and elegant their clothes, were still clumsy, lumpy and ugly and always would be. 

One day, beautiful new dresses arrived at the house. A ball was to be held at Court and the stepsisters were getting ready to go to it. Cinderella, didn't even dare ask, "What about me?" for she knew very well what the answer to that would be: 

"You? My dear girl, you're staying at home to wash the dishes, scrub the floors and turn down the beds for your stepsisters. They will come home tired and very sleepy." Cinderella sighed at the cat. 

"Oh dear, I'm so unhappy!" and the cat murmured "Miaow". 

Suddenly something amazing happened. In the kitchen, where Cinderella was sitting all by herself, there was a burst of light and a fairy appeared. 

"Don't be alarmed, Cinderella," said the fairy. "The wind blew me your sighs. I know you would love to go to the ball. And so you shall!" 

"How can I, dressed in rags?" Cinderella replied. "The servants will turn me away!" The fairy smiled. With a flick of her magic wand... Cinderella found herself wearing the most beautiful dress, the loveliest ever seen in the realm. 

"Now that we have settled the matter of the dress," said the fairy, "we'll need to get you a coach. A real lady would never go to a ball on foot!" 

"Quick! Get me a pumpkin!" she ordered. 

"Oh of course," said Cinderella, rushing away. Then the fairy turned to the cat. 

"You, bring me seven mice!" 

"Seven mice!" said the cat. "I didn't know fairies ate mice too!" 

"They're not for eating, silly! Do as you are told!... and, remember they must be alive!" 

Cinderella soon returned with a fine pumpkin and the cat with seven mice he had caught in the cellar.

The pumpkin turned into a sparkling coach and the mice became six white horses, while the seventh mouse turned into a coachman, in a smart uniform and carrying a whip. "I shall present you at Court. You will soon see that the Prince, in whose honor the ball is being held, will be enchanted by your loveliness. But remember! You must leave the ball at midnight and come home. For that is when the spell ends. Your coach will turn back into a pumpkin, the horses will become mice again and the coachman will turn back into a mouse... and you will be dressed again in rags and wearing clogs instead of these dainty little slippers! Do you understand?" Cinderella smiled and said, 

"Yes, I understand!" 

When Cinderella entered the ballroom at the palace, a hush fell. Everyone stopped in mid-sentence to admire her elegance, her beauty and grace. 

"Who can that be?" people asked each other. The two stepsisters also wondered who the newcomer was, for never in a month of Sundays, would they ever have guessed that the beautiful girl was really poor Cinderella who talked to the cat! 

When the prince set eyes on Cinderella, he was struck by her beauty. Walking over to her, he bowed deeply and asked her to dance. And to the great disappointment of all the young ladies, he danced with Cinderella all evening. 

"Who are you, fair maiden?" the Prince kept asking her. But Cinderella only replied: 

"What does it matter who I am! You will never see me again anyway." 

"Oh, but I shall, I'm quite certain!" he replied. 

Cinderella had a wonderful time at the ball... But, all of a sudden, she heard the sound of a clock: the first stroke of midnight! She remembered what the fairy had said, and without a word of goodbye she slipped from the Prince's arms and ran down the steps. As she ran she lost one of her slippers, but not for a moment did she dream of stopping to pick it up! If the last stroke of midnight were to sound... oh... what a disaster that would be! Out she fled and vanished into the night. 

The Prince, who was now madly in love with her, picked up her slipper and said to his ministers, 

"Go and search everywhere for the girl whose foot this slipper fits. I will never be content until I find her!" So the ministers tried the slipper on the foot of all the girls... and on Cinderella's foot as well... Surprise! The slipper fitted perfectly. 

"That awful untidy girl simply cannot have been at the ball," snapped the stepmother. "Tell the Prince he ought to marry one of my two daughters! Can't you see how ugly Cinderella is! Can't you see?" 
Suddenly she broke off, for the fairy had appeared. 
"That's enough!" she exclaimed, raising her magic wand. In a flash, Cinderella appeared in a splendid dress, shining with youth and beauty. Her stepmother and stepsisters gaped at her in amazement, and the ministers said, 
"Come with us, fair maiden! The Prince awaits to present you with his engagement ring!" So Cinderella joyfully went with them, and lived happily ever after with her Prince. And as for the cat, he just said "Miaow"!

Seperti halnya Cinderella - Beauty and the Beast juga menjadi salah satu dongeng bahasa Inggris atau juga cerita bahasa Inggris yang terkenal di dunia, Yuk kita pelajari:
Once upon a time as a merchant set off for market, he asked each of his three daughters what she would like as a present on his return. The first daughter wanted a brocade dress, the second a pearl necklace, but the third, whose name was Beauty, the youngest, prettiest and sweetest of them all, said to her father:  
 "All I'd like is a rose you've picked specially for me!"   

When the merchant had finished his business, he set off for home. However, a sudden storm blew up, and his horse could hardly make headway in the howling gale. Cold and weary, the merchant had lost all hope of reaching an inn when he suddenly noticed a bright light shining in the middle of a wood. As he drew near, he saw that it was a castle, bathed in light.   
"I hope I'll find shelter there for the night," he said to himself. 

When he reached the door, he saw it was open, but though he shouted, nobody came to greet him. Plucking up courage, he went inside, still calling out to attract attention. On a table in the main hall, a splendid dinner lay already served. The merchant lingered, still shouting for the owner of the castle. But no one came, and so the starving merchant sat down to a hearty meal.  
Overcome by curiosity, he ventured upstairs, where the corridor led into magnificent rooms and halls. A fire crackled in the first room and a soft bed looked very inviting. It was now late, and the merchant could not resist. He lay down on the bed and fell fast asleep. 

When he woke next morning, an unknown hand had placed a mug of steaming coffee and some fruit by his bedside.  The merchant had breakfast and after tidying himself up, went downstairs to thank his generous host. But, as on the evening before, there was nobody in sight. Shaking his head in wonder at the strangeness of it all, he went towards the garden where he had left his horse, tethered to a tree. 

Suddenly, a large rose bush caught his eye.  Remembering his promise to Beauty, he bent down to pick a rose. Instantly, out of the rose garden, sprang a horrible beast, wearing splendid clothes. Two bloodshot eyes, gleaming angrily, glared at him and a deep, terrifying voice growled: 

"Ungrateful man! I gave you shelter, you ate at my table and slept in my own bed, but now all the thanks I get is the theft of my favorite flowers! I shall put you to death for this slight!" 

Trembling with fear, the merchant fell on his knees before the Beast.  "Forgive me! Forgive me! Don't kill me! I'll do anything you say! The rose wasn't for me, it was for my daughter Beauty. I promised to bring her back a rose from my journey!" 

The Beast dropped the paw it had clamped on the unhappy merchant.   

"I shall spare your life, but on one condition, that you bring me your daughter!" The terror-stricken merchant, faced with certain death if he did not obey, promised that he would do so. When he reached home in tears, his three daughters ran to greet him. After he had told them of his dreadful adventure, Beauty put his mind at rest immediately.
 
"Dear father, I'd do anything for you! Don't worry, you'll be able to keep your promise and save your life! Take me to the castle. I'll stay there in your place!" The merchant hugged his daughter.  

"I never did doubt your love for me. For the moment I can only thank you for saving my life." So Beauty was led to the castle. The Beast, however, had quite an unexpected greeting for the girl. Instead of menacing doom as it had done with her father, it was surprisingly pleasant.  
In the beginning, Beauty was frightened of the Beast, and shuddered at the sight of it. Then she found that, in spite of the monster's awful head, her horror of it was gradually fading as time went by. 

She had one of the finest rooms in the Castle, and sat for hours, embroidering in front of the fire. And the Beast would sit, for hours on end, only a short distance away, silently gazing at her. Then it started to say a few kind words, till in the end, Beauty was amazed to discover that she was actually enjoying its conversation. The days passed, and Beauty and the Beast became good friends. 

Then one day, the Beast asked the girl to be his wife.  Taken by surprise, Beauty did not know what to say. Marry such an ugly monster? She would rather die! But she did not want to  hurt the feelings of one who, after all, had been kind to her. And she remembered too that she owed it her own life as well as her father's.   

"I really can't say yes," she began shakily. "I'd so much like to..." The Beast interrupted her with an abrupt gesture.   

"I quite understand! And I'm not offended by your refusal!" Life went on as usual, and nothing further was said. 

One day, the Beast presented Beauty with a magnificent magic mirror. When Beauty peeped into it, she could see her family, far away.   

"You won't feel so lonely now," were the words that accompanied the gift. Beauty stared for hours at her distant family. Then she began to feel worried. One day, the Beast found her weeping beside the magic mirror.   

"What's wrong?" he asked, kindly as always.               

"My father is gravely ill and close to dying! Oh, how I wish I could see him again, before it's too late!" But the Beast only shook its head.  "No! You will never leave this castle!" And off it stalked in a rage. 

However, a little later, it returned and spoke solemnly to the girl.  

"If you swear that you will return here in seven days time, I'll let you go and visit your father!" Beauty threw herself at the Beast's feet in delight.  "I swear! I swear I will! How kind you are! You've made a loving daughter so happy!" In reality, the merchant had fallen ill from a broken heart at knowing his daughter was being kept prisoner. When he embraced her again, he was soon on the road to recovery. 

Beauty stayed beside him for hours on end, describing her life at the Castle, and explaining that the Beast was really good and kind. The days flashed past, and at last the merchant was able to leave his bed. He was completely well again. Beauty was happy at last. However, she had failed to notice that seven days had gone by.  Then one night she woke from a terrible nightmare. She had dreamt that the Beast was dying and calling for her, twisting in agony.   

"Come back! Come back to me!" it was pleading. The solemn  promise she had made drove her to leave home immediately.  "Hurry! Hurry, good horse!" she said, whipping her steed onwards towards the castle, afraid that she might arrive too late. She rushed up the stairs, calling, but there was no reply. Her heart in her mouth, Beauty ran into the garden and there crouched the Beast, its eyes shut, as though dead. Beauty threw herself at it and hugged it tightly.  

"Don't die! Don't die! I'll marry you . . ." At these words, a miracle took place. The Beast's ugly snout turned magically into the face of a handsome young man.  "How I've been longing for this moment!" he said. "I was suffering in silence, and couldn't tell my frightful secret. An evil witch turned me into a monster and only the love of a maiden willing to accept me as I was, could transform me back into my real self. My dearest! I'll be so happy if you'll marry me."  The wedding took place shortly after and, from that day on, the young Prince would have nothing but roses in his gardens. And that's why, to this day, the castle is known as the Castle of the Rose.

Long ago, in an area in west sumatra, there is a very active volcano named Mount Tinjau. In one village at the foot of Tinjau's brothers lived ten people consisting of nine men and one woman. Ordinary citizens about their call Bujang Sembilan. These ten brothers are Kukuban, Kudun, Bayua, Malintang, Galapuang, Balok, Batang,Bayang, and the youngest man named Kaciak. While their brother the youngest was a girl named Siti Rasani, nicknamed Sani. Both their parents died long ago, so Kukuban as the eldest son became the head of household. All decisions in his hand.
Tenth brothers lived in a house of their parents' heritage. To make ends meet, they worked on farms large enough legacy of their parents. They are very skilled at farming, because they diligently to help his father and mother when they were alive. In addition, they are also guided by their uncle named Datuk Limbatang, which they called Engku familiar.
Indahnya Danau Maninjau

Datuk Limbatang is a mamak in the village and has a son named Giran. As a mamak, Datuk Limbatang have great responsibility to educate and watched the life of its citizens, including the nephew's tenth man. For that, every other day, he visited the house Kukuban brothers to teach them farming skills and various customs procedures for the area. Not infrequently Datuk Limbatang also took his wife and son to participate with him.

Datuk Limbatang wanted to marry his son with Sani. But the elder brother Sani, Kukuban, did not agree because Giran has been embarrass him in the martial arts arena. But eventually Datuk Limbatang not force.
One day, Giran found treat wounds in the thigh Sani. But people think they do custom distortion. Sani and Garin brought to court. They try to convince citizens that they did not do anything.

After that, of the second Giran lifted his hand to the sky and praying. "My God! Please hear and grant our prayers. If we were really guilty, destroy our bodies in the water hot crater of this mountain. However, if we are not guilty, this mountain letuskanlah and curses Bujang Sembilan to fish!"
It turned out that prayer was answered. Sani and Giran jump down and submerged in the water crater. Mountain erupted, Bujang Sembilan into fish. Over time the crater of Mount View expanded and formed a lake which we now know as Lake Maninjau

Once upon a time, in the coastal area of Sumatra, lives a poor family. The family had a kid named Malin Kundang. Due to very poor condition of their families, Malin kundang's father decided to go to the country side.

Malin kundang and his mother hope that he could bring some money and support their daily needs. Time after time, they wait for him, but he did not come. They even believed that he is already dead.

Feeling sad, Malin kundang thought that he could make a living in the country side in the hope that later on when returning to my hometown; he has become a very rich. Finally Malin kundang go sailing along with a merchant ship captain in his hometown that has been successful.

Kehidupan Malin Kundang Sebagai Pelaut

During his stay on the ship, Malin kundang lot to learn about seamanship on the crew that has been experienced. Malin studied hard on his friends shipping on more experienced, and ultimately he's very good at shipping.

Many islands have been, up to a day in the middle of the trip, suddenly Malin kundang ships were attacked by pirates. All merchandise traders who were on the ship seized by pirates. Even most of the crew and people on the ship were killed by the pirates. Malin kundang very lucky he was not killed by the pirates, because when it happened, Malin immediately hid in a small space enclosed by the timber.
 

Malin Kundang floats amid sea, until finally the host ship stranded on a beach. With the rest of the existing power, Malin Kundang walked to the nearest village from the beach. Arriving in the village, Malin Kundang told the ntives about the incident that happened to him. Malin village where villagers stranded is very fertile. With tenacity and perseverance in work, over time Malin had become a very rich. He has many fruit merchant ships with the children of more than 100 people. After becoming rich, Malin Kundang marry a girl to become his wife.

Kembalinya Malin 

After a long marriage, Malin and his wife make the voyage with a large and beautiful ship with the crew and a lot of bodyguards. Malin kundangs wife want to know his husbands hometowns. In the other side, poor Malin kundang mothers was worried about his son, and goes to the beach everyday, hope that her son will be back from the journey. She saw a very beautiful ship landed on the town harbour. Malin's mother who always checks every ship that arrived, hoping there is his son among the passenger, surprised to see a man. She founds out that he is her son Malin kundang.

Malin Kundang stepped down from the ship. Once close enough, his mother saw the birthmarks on Malin kundangs arm. She is now convinced that Malin is her son. Missed so much, she hug his son and asked "Malin Kundang, my son, why did you go so long without sending any news to me?". Arrogantly, Malin immediately released her mother's arms and pushed him up to fall. "Old women, I do not know who you are" said Malin Kundang at his mother. Malin Kundang pretended not to recognize her mother, because of shame with her mother who is old and wearing tattered clothes. "She was your mother?" Malin's wife asks him. "No, he was just a beggar who pretended to be admitted as a mom to get my property".

Hearing statement and treated arbitrarily by his son, the mother of Malin kundang is very angry. He did not expect him to be rebellious child. Because anger is mounting, Malin's mother tipped his hand, saying "Oh God, if he my son, I curse him became a stone." Malin's mother goes away with sad feelings. Knowing that his only son, which she always loves and missed all days, come and treat her like that.

Malin kundang and his crew departed shortly after visiting the hometown.Soon after departed, the calm, nice weather suddenly changed. The winds roared fierce and storms come to destroy the ship Kundang. Malin himself knows that it might be the curse from his own mother. That makes Malin prays, to beg a mercy from the God. The ship are destroyed and dumped into the beach. Malin's body and the shipwrecks scattered. After that Malin' body slowly becomes rigid and in time they finally shaped into a rock. Malin's mothers feel sorry about her son's fate. But it was too late.

In moslem tradition, it is believed that prays from the parents are easily granted by God, either bad or goods. This story told people to be humbles and do not forget his family after being successful, the story also told the parents that they must not easily pray a bad things to their children, and guide their children with care and lots of patients

In the old days of Java Island, in a region called Prambanan, lies two kingdom. Kingdom of Pengging and Kraton Boko. Pengging kingdom is gifted with a fertile and get prosperous. The kingdom is lead by a wise king named Prabu Damar Moyo and has a male son named Raden Bandung Bondowoso while Kraton Boko is a kingdom that obey under the rules of Pengging. The Boko king is very cruel, he is strong and tall, like a giant. The people of Boko always afraid of the kings anger. Although the king were not handsome, he has a very beautiful daughter called Princess Roro Jongrang.

One day, the king of Boko wants to rebels against the Pengging. Lead by the Boko prime minister, the giant race, Gopolo, the Boko army is prepared to announce the war between Boko and Pengging. They even raid its own people's properties to support the campaign.

Fierce war happens in the borders of the Pengging teritorial mark. Many victims were falling on both sides and people Pengging be suffering because of war, many people hunger and poverty. Knowing his people suffer and have many victims soldiers who died in the borders, then Prabu Damar Moyo sent his son Raden Bondowoso go to war against King Boko. The young Bondowoso is able to defeat king Boko. Seeing the king died, then Prime minister Gupolo escape. Raden Bondowoso pursue Patih Gupolo to Kraton Boko.

After reaching Kraton Boko, Patih Gupolo reported on Princess Roro Jonggrang that his father had been lost in the battlefield, by a knight named Raden Bandung Pengging Bondowoso. Princess Loro Jonggrang wept, saddened his heart because his father had been killed on the battlefield. Raden at Kraton Boko Bondowoso arrived, soom he troubled to see Puteri Raden Bondowoso Loro Jonggrang beautiful, so he wanted to marry Princess Loro Jonggrang as his wife.

As the Boko kingdom is lost in the rebels, and o save her fathers kingdom, the Loro Puteri Raden Jonggrang accept the princes, with some request. She did not want to marry Bondowoso because he had killed his father. To reject the proposal Raden Bondowoso, then Princess Loro Jonggrang have a strategy. The first request, Princess Loro Jonggrang asked for Jalatunda wells (very deep well) while the second request, asked for him to make 1000 temples in one night.

Raden Bandung Bondowoso agreed. Raden Bondowoso Immediately make Jalatunda wells and after so he called Princess Roro Jonggrang to see the well. She trick the prince and send him down. She ask Boko's prime minister to close the well with heavy rocks so that the prince could not reach the top of the well. Raden Bondowoso is a tough man, he is also smart. Its not a longtime before he was able to come out from the wells. He was very angry to the princess, but soon after meet the princess, he falls again with the beauty of the princess

She ask Raden Bondowoso the second request, to make 1000 temples in 1 night. Bondowoso then command his workers from genie tribe to help him build the 1000 temple. The 1000 temples are building up, one by one with the help of the genie tribes. The princess wants to sabotage the building of the temples. She asks her servants to pound the rice pounding tools and also burns lots of paddy's straw .

Because of it, the roosters crowed. The genie take a lookto the sky and its brighter in the east. The leader of the genie reported to Bondowoso that they have stopped to make the temple because the morning has arrived. Princess Roro Jonggrang told to count the temples and its only 999 temples, not 1000.

So, Bondowoso won't be able to marry the princess because he failed to complete the request. Being deceived and tricked, Raden Bondowoso angry and curse Princess Roro Jonggrang. "It's missing one, and you that should fit the numbers". The princess is soon turned into a stone statue; it is exist in the heart of the Prambanan temples until now.
